Greenwashing
A survey from 2007 was conducted by The Travel Industry Association found that 78% of Americans would consider themselves environmentally conscious. 38% of travelers say they would pay more to travel with a company that protect and preserves the environment.
Traveling green is the current trend on the mainstream for consumers and is currently a part of corporate culture. Organizations are worried that the meaning of eco-tourism is being used as a marketing tool to increase demand for a boost in revenue. Because there is a lack in standardization and labeling of the term, the tourism industry can simply use “eco” on their brochures and would jack up prices.
The Mohonk is an agreement of criteria the tourism industries came up with. A couple of examples of some criteria they mentioned.
